ESG means Environmental, Social, Governance, which in short is a company’s ability to take care of environmental and social factors. The term ESG is mainly used as a measurement of a company’s performance when it comes to social responsibility and sustainability.
ESG becomes more and more important for a company’s reputation and values, and the fish farming industry will be increasingly measured in the future by its surroundings and stake holders. It is not enough to follow governmental requirements; it is also necessary to follow the trends and demands of the market.
According to ENOVA the Norwegian fish farming industry’s emission of greenhouse gasses amounts to approx. 650.000 t/year, if freight of raw materials used to produce fish feed and freight of the fish to the markets are excluded. These emissions mainly come from the Aqua Marine Service-segment (the vessels), and it is therefore necessary to implement measures in this sector to contribute to an even more sustainable fish farming industry in the future. If the fish farming industry is to achieve its growth target up to 2050, it is probably fair to assume that the emissions will increase by 2-3x without any measures taken.
Vessels that are built for the future, with energy efficient solutions, will contribute to the sustainability of the industry. This will be decisive for the players in the Aqua Marine Service-segment going forward, to maintain competitiveness, and secure the attractiveness in the second-hand market. And not least, this is important for the ESG-reporting and sustainability of the industry as whole.
To make sure that we have integrated sustainability and social responsibility in our daily operations, we have defined some points that we are working continuously with:
